A Prayer of the Trinity
Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth:
Set up your kingdom in our midst.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God:
Have mercy on me, a sinner.
Holy Spirit, breath of the living God:
Renew me and all the world.
This prayer starts by centering our minds on the Trinitarian universe, a reality that God the Father is the author and Creator. Here in the present, we look for signs that His creation is being made perfect through Christ’s resurrection.
The second clause is an Orthodox prayer that reminds us, if we are honest, the deep realization of our own confusion, inadequacy for the task of making the world right again, rebellion, distortion of God’s will, and frank, no-nonsense, old-fashioned sin. We need His mercy and unending love.
But the story doesn’t end there. We pray for our own restoration. We are praying that the whole creation may find the full rejuvenated life for which it was made. In this prayer, we look forward to the full realization of His Kingdom through the pouring out of the Holy Spirit.
