“the communion of saints”
Readings for the week of August 10
Every time we pray morning prayer, we also pray (or proclaim) the Apostles’ Creed. During the “I believe in the communion of saints” part, one of our regulars can be seen looking at the various icons on the walls. In addition to images of Christ and other biblical characters one can people as diverse as St. Ephraim the Syrian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dorothy Day, Father Emil Kapaun, St. Patrick, Johnny Cash, Arthur Guinness, Flannery O’Conner, and many, many others.
Hebrews 11 is sometimes called the “Roll Call of Faith”. It is a reminder to us all, that God’s faithful people have lived throughout the ages, in all kinds of circumstances, locations, and origins. As we read Hebrews 11 and as we boldly proclaim the “communion of the saints” (See Hebrew 12:1-2) we can rightfully imagine ourselves on the walls of the Ladder or in the “roll call of faith.”
Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always
those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without
you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
