Readings for the Week of July 20

Psalm 52Amos 8:1-12Colossians 1:15-28Luke 10:38-42

Jesus Christ has many different names. he is the “Lamb of God”, “the Lion of Judah”, “the bright and Morningstar”. All of these names are important and there are others.

When Jesus is described as the “firstborn over all creation” it is a reminder to us that Jesus stands above all creation. He is preeminent. This comes not only from his presence at creation, and his continued maintenance of creation, but because of his resurrection. Jesus is the firstborn from among the dead and thus he will be the first one leading us all in our own resurrection.

The Bible does not describe Jesus as the only born but the firstborn. He is not the only one to be resurrected but the first. Victorious over death we now live with him and in him through the vicissitudes of this life.

“The lamb has conquered. Let us follow him.”

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
