As I read the Bible I discover “layers” of meaning in the text. The message I read in specific passages is generally the same as it was many years ago. However, as I continue to read Scripture there seems to be additional applications of the same words that appear over time.

The Gospel reading for this week is about the healing of the centurion’s servant. The centurion (a Roman military leader) asks Jesus to heal his servant. He is commended by Jesus because he has “such great faith”. Jesus suggests that the faith of this pagan, Roman outsider is greater than what he is found among those whose faith was supposed to be great, the people of Israel.
