“. . . and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.” – I Kings 19:12

Silentium

Elijah ran over 100 miles because he was afraid of Ahab’s wife, Jezebel. Who wouldn’t be? She wanted him dead and she always got what she wanted.

Jezebel’s anger at Elijah was because of Elijah’s success against the priests of Baal. YHWH, through Elijah, destroyed the altars to Jezebel’s false God and killed all of those summoning him. YHWH’s action against Israel’s false gods didn’t calm Jezebel’s rage. She demanded Elijah’s death.

Suddenly, the man of God, who summoned the power of YHWH, destroyed Baal’s altar, was freaked out by an enraged queen. So he ran.

Elijah couldn’t hear God in his success, he couldn’t hear God in the noise of storms, in earthquakes, but only in the “sound of sheer silence”.

Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
