“Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.” – Isaiah 7:14

Ps 80:1-7, 17-19 • Isaiah 7:10-16 • Romans 1:1-7 • Matthew 1:18-25

As each week of Advent passes, joy makes a greater appearance. The anticipation of the season is not complete but it is coupled with greater hopefulness, a lightness, as we see the events of  Christ’s incarnation take place.

This weekend we are still reading from Isaiah but we are confronted with a marvelous word,  Immanuel, “God with us.” The joy of God’s presence is anticipated as we celebrate his coming. Christ comes to us in Bethlehem, in our hearts, and in our future where he makes all things new.

Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
